What are the plans for Highway 212? When is it going to be widened?
Highway 212 is an Oregon State highway. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has jurisdiction over the planning of Highway 212. In addition to ODOT, other federal agencies and local government agencies are involved in the planning process for improvements along this corridor. The Highway 212 Corridor Plan study was initiated in November 2008 and will establish recommendations for future improvements to Highway 212. A public workshop was held in June 2009 to draft alternative solutions for Highway 212’s current and future transportation needs. At this time the project is on hold until the City Council adopts the Comprehensive Plan. Once the Comprehensive Plan is adopted, the alternative concepts will be further analyzed and evaluated.

What are the plans for the Carver Bridge?
Clackamas County and the Oregon Department of Transportation are currently in the process of planning to replace the Carver Bridge with a new five-lane bridge including a center turn lane. Clackamas County will build the replacement bridge for the Carver Bridge at its current location. This decision, made primarily because the County has been unable to obtain the additional funds needed to build at an alternative location, eliminates the upstream alignment alternative and related improvements to the Highway 224 intersection.
Building the new bridge at the site of the current bridge will:
- Provide the funds to include sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of the bridge.
- Give the County and its partners (the City of Damascus and the Oregon Department of Transportation) more time to plan, coordinate and fund future transportation improvements in the area, such as the Highway 224 intersection.
The County is completing the engineering and design for the new bridge. Construction will be carefully staged in order to maintain a two-way flow of traffic during the majority of the project while keeping closures to a minimum. The total bridge replacement construction process is expected to take two years and could begin as soon as spring 2010.
If you have questions or comments, please call the project information line at (503) 736-4800 or visit the Carver Bridge project website.

What are the plans for the Sunrise Project?
Sunrise Project Description - The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Clackamas County propose to build a new, east-west oriented, limited-access highway between I-205 and the Rock Creek Junction. The purpose of the proposed Sunrise Project is to effectively address the existing congestion and safety problems in the OR 212/224 corridor between its interchange with I-205 and Rock Creek Junction, and to serve the growing demand for regional travel and access to the state highway system.
Project Status - Based on public input and early technical information, project committees narrowed the range of alternatives for the Sunrise Project in 2006. Two "build" alternatives and one "no build" (or "do nothing") alternative were selected for thorough study in a Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). That work has been completed and the findings are documented in a Supplement Draft Environmental Impact Statement document (SDEIS) released October 13, 2008. The SDEIS and supporting technical documents will be available for review on the project website as well as at Damascus City Hall, 19920 SE Hwy 212, Damascus OR 97089.
Sunrise Parkway - The exact route, character, and function of a "second phase" of the Sunrise Corridor, known as the Sunrise Parkway, has not yet been determined. An environmental impact statement (EIS) has not been funded; recent communication from ODOT and Clackamas County now contemplates a two to four-lane limited access scenic parkway south of the Highway 212 corridor that would connect with Highway 212 near 172nd Avenue on the west and east of 242nd Avenue outside the Damascus city limits on the east. An in-depth study must be completed before the final route and design are determined.

What are the city's plans for future roads, trails and/or transit?
In January 2009 the City of Damascus initiated its first Transportation System Plan (TSP). The City, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), is developing the TSP and an Oregon Highway 212 (OR-212) Land Use and Transportation Sub-Area Corridor Plan (212-Corridor Plan) that will identify future highway improvements and land uses along OR-212. The planning effort will identify current transportation problems and needs and recommend future transportation investments that complement the Draft Damascus Comprehensive Plan. The TSP will identify alternative transportation investment strategies and evaluate effects on the future character of Damascus resulting from investments that support walking, bicycling, and public transit use, and managed parking facilities. The TSP will recommend specific improvements to increase connectivity within Damascus and improve linkages to regional transportation systems. A component of the work will describe the general timing of improvements and programs, and potential costs and funding sources. A public workshop was held in June 2009 to draft alternative solutions for the City’s current and future transportation needs (link to presentation). At this time the project is on hold until the City Council adopts the Comprehensive Plan. Once the Comprehensive Plan is adopted, the alternative concepts will continue to be analyzed and evaluated.
